Come Visit the New Site at

Here is a guide showing you how to jailbreak your iPod Touch 2nd Generation on Windows. The release was originally only for MACS but here is a guide on how to do it in Windows.

EDIT: Shortperson1026 has relesaed an AUTOMATED version of the jailbreak which makes it WAAYY easier to do! Download it HERE

HERE IS ANOTHER VERSION BY PHEONIX THAT IS ABIT EASIER! Make sure you read the readme included and follow the guide written in it STEP BY STEP: DOWNLOAD

HERE is the semi-tethered working jailbreak with a HD video tutorial: CLICK ME

What you’ll need:
redsn0w lite
iRecovery and libusb
2.1.1 IPSW
2.2.1 IPSW

1.) Extract redsn0w lite and XPwn to your Desktop.

2.) Save (or move) the 2.2.1 IPSW into the XPwn folder.

3.) In the rslite101 folder, there should be a FirmwareBundles folder; copy the iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle into your XPwn\FirmwareBundles\ folder.

4.) Open up a Command Prompt (type cmd in the Search bar if on Vista).

5.) Type the following:

cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\XPwn-0.5.7-win32\
ipsw "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw" "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Custom_Restore.ipsw" -s 700 bundles\Cydia.tar

If you’re running XP, your location will be a bit different (should be C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Desktop\).

Also, if you’re running XP (with PowerToys), Vista, or 7, you can easily navigate to folders in a Command Prompt without using cd.
Simply hold shift, then right click on a folder (here, for example, you’d shift and right click on XPwn-0.5.7-win32), then select Open Command Window here.
This can be done with any other part of this tutorial that involves cd.
Thanks, MatthewH12!

6.) Wait for XPwn to finish, it should only take a few minutes.

7.) Extract all files in the iRecovery RAR to your Desktop and open the iRecovery folder, there should be an installer for libusb located here.
If you haven’t already installed libusb, please do so now.
If you’re running Vista or 7, please right click the .exe and select Properties, then click the Compatibility tab, then select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down menu.
After install, a restart may be required.

8.) Open another Command Prompt (or use the one you used before, if it is still up) and type the following:

cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\iRecovery\iRecovery_SVN

Again, your location will be different if you’re on XP, see above.

9.) Extract your 2.1.1 iBSS and 2.2.1 iBSS and iBoot.
To do so, right click your 2.1.1 IPSW and select Open with > WinRAR archiver.
Navigate to the Firmware\dfu directory, then drag iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu into your iRecovery_SVN folder.
Rename it iBSS211.dfu.
Now, open up your custom 2.2.1 IPSW using WinRAR.
First, navigate to the Firmware\dfu folder and drag iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu into your iRecovery_SVN folder.
Rename is iBSS221.dfu.
Now, navigate to the Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.n72ap.production folder.
Extract iBoot.n72ap.RELEASE.img3 to your iRecovery_SVN folder.
Rename it iBoot221.img3.

10.) Put your iPod into DFU mode (this is out of the scope of this tutorial, sorry).
Bring up your Command Prompt again and execute the following:

iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfu

Your iPod’s screen should turn white.
If it doesn’t, unplug your iPod and wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

11.) In the same Command Prompt, enter the following:

iRecovery -s
mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300

Just to clarify, you will hit enter after each of these commands.

12.) Restore to your custom firmware using iTunes (hold shift and hit Restore, then select iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11_Custom_Restore.ipsw).
It may hang on “Preparing..” for a long time; just wait it out, it’ll move on eventually.

13.) After your restore is complete, put you iPod into DFU mode, you’ll have to apply the patch again to boot.
You will also have to do these same things each time you boot from now on:

iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfu

Unplug your iPod, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
Your screen should be white now.
Run the following after:

iRecovery -s
mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300
/sendfile iBSS221.dfu

Wait for your iPod to reconnect (it should disappear in iTunes, then reappear in a couple seconds).
Run the following:

iRecovery -f iBoot221.img3
iRecovery -s

14.) Your iPod should now be booting; enjoy you tethered jailbreak.

Also, don’t forget that if you want to reboot your iPod, each time you’ll have to repeat step 13, and step 13 only.

Edit: Please do not PM me right now, I can’t help you.
It’s my birthday today, so people are at my house for my party (that I didn’t even want).
Also, I don’t have a 2G and cannot really troubleshoot that well.
Please ask in the thread or search.

Also, if you think you’ve bricked your device, you haven’t.
Keep trying to enter either restore or DFU mode, there’s always a way to save your device, just don’t panic.

Finally, by following these instructions, you take responsibility for whatever may happen to your iPod.
It is not that dangerous, but it’s not my fault if something fluky were to happen.

Edit 2: If iRecovery won’t work for you, please install this.

  2. James Says:

BIG question: I am using that automated version by shortperson. Everything goes perfectly until I reach his iRecovery section. He says to do arm7_stop then go, then cntr+c, N. After doing this the ipod started normally, and I had to boot into DFU once more. When installing my jailbroken ipsw I received a 1601 error. Currently I am trying your irecovery codes.

  3. Tino Says:

Hey, I would say great job but I would first like to see some sort of hacked device running a few jail broken apps.

    Thanks for reading

  4. psp2468 Says:

James: Did the other iRecovery codes work for you?

  5. orestis Says:

i followed your instructions and all went ok…Thank you so much !!! I have a question , how can i install apps without cydia?

  6. nathan Says:

nothing happens to the cmd or the ipod when i do step 10…like my ipod is in dfu and i have the iBSS221.dfu files in irecovery but for some reason nothing happens….HELP!!

  7. Jimmy Says:

Dont understand, if i download that automatic thing by shortperson , will i have to do all the process?
    Another question
Can i use another computer than i always use to sync?
    Thanks to any reply

  8. psp2468 Says:

@orestis: congrats! You can’t really install apps not using Cydia I’m afraid.

@nathen: I have no idea I’m afraid. Try using one of the automated ones.

@Jimmy: I belive you may still have to do one or two of the processes but I may be wrong.
You can use a different computer to the one you sync with.

  9. orestis Says:

And how can i install apps now?

  10. Moose Says:

Something has gone seriously wrong for me lol windows says “device unrecognised” I don’t think this is normal it did it after applying the patch in iTunes. Boot.bat doesnt recognise the ipod either.

  11. Josh Says:

Hey I just noticed.. the “iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle” in the rslite folder is actually named “iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a.bundle”. Maybe this will help with some of the people having trouble. I’m trying to figure out what I did wrong myself. I followed the steps very carefully and when i type “iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfu” into the cmd it comes back as “The system cannot execute the specified program.” I’m going to retrace my steps and see if I made any mistakes. I’ll let you know if I get it working. Be very careful when doing this guys. Hope I didn’t interrupt your party. Thanks a lot, I’ve been waiting a long time for this!

  12. norbert Says:

wtf ive tried it five times wont work help

  13. Jimmy Says:

    hi, its me again
    ive got another question…

ive already done everything it says (according to the phoenix-made thing) until it says to run the jailbreak.bat file, once jailbreak.bat is opened, it tells me to put the ipod into dfu mode (done), then to disconnect and reconnect it (done) and then it says that the screen should turn white in a few sweconds, but it wont!

    any reply will be apreciated
    and thank you psp2469!!

  14. Alex Says:

ok im using the automated version and when i try step one it says ” error could not load ipsw”

and i cant do any thing else from there

  15. Nicolas Says:

I’m jam after step 12, I have upload the ipws the Itouch shutdown then it wont turn back on :S Any Idea ?

  16. edward morales Says:

will cydia and installer be on the ipod touch after jailbroken

  17. Josh Says:

Here is how I did it.. hope it works for you.

while the ipod is ON, hold power+home until the screen turns off. after the screen turns off, release power button and hold on to the hold button. Wait until you hear the “ding” sound when it reconnects, then let go. I tried that and now my screen is blank. I’m pretty sure it worked because the screen won’t turn on.

after getting the screen blank, I am trying to figure out where i need to paste the codes. It says “be ready to paste”, hit any key, then “patched iBSS will now be transferred.” I have tried pasting it in every place after that and it won’t work. Was another cmd supposed to open? I can’t find the “PatchedFW.ipsw” at all. Where does that get moved to? Help is always appreciated. Thanks.

  18. john Says:

I am using the first auto one and a error comes up saying can not load ipsw. if someone can help me plz reply

  19. Josh Says:

Finally! I got it after about 5 hours of trying to find the problem. Simple fix.. installed “Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package”. If you are having trouble with iRecovery, hit the link at the bottom of the guide. It’ll save you 4 hours. Thanks a lot guys! I’m ready to play some NES.

  20. Jimmy Says:

    is there anybody out there???
ive managed to get into dfu mode (my screen is black and its detected by my computer) but the screen doesnt get white! it just stays in black!

    pleasee!! help me
i like white more than black!

  21. Moose Says:

My problem wasnt a problem lol I didn’t realise it switched ur ipod off after recovery but windows could still detect it sort of. Jimmy did you type the commands and press enter after the last /exit? cause that was a problem i did.

  22. Moose Says:

Soz my last comment about /exit was stupid as the white screen comes before that, make sure no error messages appear as the thing carries on regardless.

  23. rawrrberries Says:

hey. so this is a tethered jailbreak? if so, when is the non-tethered one coming out?

  24. James Says:

Yes indeed! I mixed your memory write codes with his (inserted your code where they should have been in his readme) and it works fantastically. Cydia running/winterboard you name it! Fantastic tutorial. The automated version is good but for anyone doing it, you MUST add the MW codes between the arm7_stop / go as you show it. This will solve any problems being had 🙂

    Cheers, and great work

  25. Anas Says:

It seems the automated version didn’t work for anybody yet, … but I may be wrong.

When it tells u to unplug and replug, and u did so, ur screen will turn white … it did for me at least, but i got stuck with restoring to the jailbrokenFW.ipsw, cuz it always gives me an error (1604)

  26. Sune Says:

    My iPod wont start!
    Omfg, help me?
it all went wrong at Step 5!

  27. Jimmy Says:

    its me again!
in other post, theres a gui to do this, and its pretty good by the way
    but ive got a problem
everything is done quite right, except for the LAST step
the one where you must type go and /exit
i started in dfu mode, pressed the first button “upload patched dfu”, pressed the other three buttons, but my ipod didnt do anything else!

it doesnt seem to be alive anymore!
    any feedback will be apreciated!

  28. George Says:

I can’t seem to get the ipod to go into the white or black screen.

i press and hold the two buttons for 10 seconds, in that time the ipod turns off and a black screen appears with the apple logo on it, i let go of the power button and hold home for another couple of seconds and it goes to a screen with the itunes symbol and a usb symbol,

u then apply the DFU patches as instructed and start itunes to restore the jailbroken firmware file but after about 5 minutes itunes gives me error code 1604

    any helpful suggestions?

You have either not gotten into DFU mode or you need to install the “Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package” so that iRecovery will boot properly.

(Be as precise as possible, it may take a few tries)

While the ipod is ON, hold down the power+hold buttons for TEN SECONDS. Then release the power button while you continue to press the hold button. Wait until you hear the computer make the “connection” sound, or wait 10 seconds. Enter the code and it should bring up text in the cmd and the screen should turn white.

INSTALLING “Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package”—-
Link at bottom of guide. Install and you should be good.

used the GUI installation to jb my ipod 2g and the 4 second boot to reboot after jb it, i had a few problems with the instalation of the usb software, use to make my usb port to stop to work and then my computer will not wor any more, then i needed to uninstall the software again from safe mode of windows, after a few attempts to install the same software again only works (for me) when i put my Ipod in recovery mode (with the black screen) and then install the software again, after that i could jb my ipod and im enjoing a lot XD

To enter DFU mode, the best way for me, put all the volume in your computer, conect the ipod and you will hear the conection made sound, then close the itunes, press at the same time the power and the home button, until you can hear the desconection sound (10 seconds aprox) and relese the power button keeping the home pressed until you can hear the conection made sound again (from 5 to 8 seconds aprox), that work for me, hope works for you

Any help would be GREATLY Appreciated!

  48. Josh Says:

Hey guys, if you have success with this guide, please post about it. It may be more comforting for others to know that this works.

a word of advice.. if you want to install “Winterboard”, it requires you to reboot the device. Just hit the restart button after installing, your ipod will shut off, do step 13 and it will be up and running. If you had trouble with step 13 in the first place and made it “somehow work”, you might think twice before installing Winterboard. Happy jailbreaking!

  57. Josh Says:

  67. Jodyssey Says:

    Hi all,
I attempted the GUI jailbreak just now. I got to the step where you install the new jailbreak firmware. It installed after some time. After it was done, the screen was black and nothing happened after that. The ipod now does not start and is an unrecognized USB device. I tried holding the power button and home button for 10-11 sec and then just the home button for 8. Where the ding of the computer telling me a usb device has plugged in is supposed to happen, it just tells me the device isn’t recognized. I still continue to wait the extra 8 seconds on the home button but nothing happens. The ipod does not start. Have I completely destroyed it or is there hope?

  68. raperce Says:

hey Jodyssey don’t worry about the Ipod it works but in the restore mode. just turn the sound on and try it several times with pushing the buttons and wait for your PC to not showing the message that the usb is not recognized, and you will hear the sound of pluging the ipod ( but will not show that is ipod )
after that read this there is a Cywood application.. continue with step 5… and do what is writen there. It works, but I have one problem with restarting or switch off the Ipod, every swtch off or restarting I must plug into my computer and continue with step 5 from the Cywood application

then i started the “USB device is Unknown”
when i got that i just restarted my laptop and it was fixed…

  73. jjkillaz Says:

Tyler, you are definatley supposed to do the shift-click restore step. A directory window will open and you have to locate and install the hacked firmware. As the iphone-devs state clearly on their website, only attempt the jailbreak if you know what you are doing. Please don’t flame us if you don’t follow the directions properly. Ask nicely and I will be glad to help you.

Also, if you already synced your ipod with itunes before, then it will give you the option to sync your files back to the device. The jailbreak isn’t easy, it takes some patience.

Halolover, are you trying to download it off of the ipod? You need to use a PC.

    any suggestion

  79. sebasjani Says:

I fix it. but still i couldn’t get the white screen.

  80. jjkillaz Says:

Cathrine, remember that when it powers off, it becomes useless until you do step 13 on the computer.

  81. jjkillaz Says:

Sebajani, on which step does it not give you the white screen? I have seen this problem before. Try restarting the computer and retrying the step. It may not work the first couple times. Be patient, keep trying. I had a guy with the same problem. Try to go through the steps quickly, pay close attention to details, and it should work eventually. This is partly why it isn’t an official jailbreak. I may be starting a jailbreaking service soon and I can jailbreak it and send you the files/instructions to reboot it. If any of you are having problems, I will let you know if and when I can start this.

  82. Cathrine Says:

So do i use irecovery for this or what??
Im kinda new to this whole stuff?

  83. jjkillaz Says:

    Yes, you always use iRecovery.

I have a new guide up for anybody having problems with the jailbreak.

  89. dont_be_a_haider Says:

i also got stuck on step 12, i got error code (1604)
ugh…. i just gave up, i really wanted it jailbroken :/

  90. Micro007 Says:

You will always need to tether it to boot it. That’s part of the jailbreak contract right now. The dev team has been crystal clear numerous times about this being a TETHERED jailbreak. If you can’t handle it, don’t hack it.

I also recommend the full tethered jb over the semi tethered one. The semi tether is full of bugs, and won’t boot into normal mode when most common cydia apps are installed (FiveIconDock, fcsb.054.deb)
The full tether is slot more userfriendly. I’ve tried them both, and I constantly install both to tinker.

Thank you iPod Dev-Team! Your work is amazing.

  95. Matt Says:

ok guys something went wrong and even though I installed the untethered jailbreak it still refuses to run after a reboot (like the semi-tethered) is there any way to delete everything new I ever added to my ipod cuz just restoring it from iTunes doesn’t seem to work cuz every time I get another jailbreak it lowers my total capacity, right now I think its 6.74GB so can anyone help me start off fresh with no problems?
